New technologies and media bring about changes in occupations. Job requirements shift and change. There’s always something new. Multi-layered tasks in the fields of information and communication demand complex knowledge, diverse skills and lead to new designated occupations. This is why the future-oriented and creative occupation of “Media Designer” has been restructured from 1 August 2007.
Before a print or multimedia product can be produced, all of the image and text information must be brought together, digitalized and designed. Today the complete layout is created on a monitor. Using powerful graphics software, texts are positioned, images and templates scanned or data processed, photographs optimized for the respective process using image processing applications, and graphics made reader-friendly. Media Designers are additionally responsible for the appropriate preparation and storage of data in corresponding databases. This makes the production of different media from a standardized datapool possible. Before the electronic data are transmitted for further processing, a proof is created if required in order to review the printing process.
The designated occupation of Media Designer for Digital and Print Media is subdivided into three specialist fields: Design and Technology, Planning and Consulting, Conception and Visualization.
At Axel Springer in Berlin and Hamburg, Media Designers are trained in the specialist field of Design and Technology. In this specialist field the preparatory typographic and image-related work is in the foreground, as are the handling of texts, images, tables, sound data and databases. The principal activity consists of combining texts and images to form a meaningful media template for a print or digital product.
The computer is a Media Designer’s most important tool. In addition to this, important prerequisites are the enjoyment of using hardware and software (image processing, layout and design programs) as well as creativity in designing with fonts, images, shapes and colors. What is more good eyesight and color discrimination as well as good spelling skills are required. Do you have an intermediate school-leaving certificate, a higher-education entrance qualification (Abitur) or a certificate from a commercial college? Then Axel Springer AG is right where you belong!
