Enviromental Indicators

This table follows the guidelines issued by the "Global Reporting Initiative" (GRI), which has been developing recommendations for the internationally uniform structuring of sustainability reports since 1997.

The abbreviation "EN" in the GRI Numbers stands for "Environmental".

Energy

Indirect energy consumption: energy used for the production and supply of the direct energy consumed EN4 The indirect energy consumption is not recorded. Nevertheless, CO2-emissions caused by primary energies are registered and reported. The system threshold for the Input-Output Balance is formed by Axel Springer AG.

Bio-Diversity
Location and size of area utilized in habitats particularly rich in species EN6 This indicator is not relevant since the production locations are located in industrial zones in which no species-rich habitats exist. In the year 2000 a renaturalization project was implemented at the Ahrensburg printing facility.
Description of the main impacts of operations, products and service on bio-diversity. EN7 On this issue, the publishing firm has published the studies "Evaluation of the Ecological Life-Cycles of Newspapers and Magazines" and "Ecological Improvements in the Paper Chain".
Emissions, Waste Water and Waste

Emissions in waste waters (oils/fats, TSS, COD, BOD, metals, not easily degradable organic chemicals) EN12 The quality of waste water is continuously tested and conforms to statutory regulations.
Significant quantities of spilled chemicals, oils and fuels EN13 In the period 2004 / 2005 no significant quantities were spilled.
Major Products
Significant environmental impacts of products in each stage of the life-cycle EN14 On this issue, the publishing firm has published the studies "Evaluation of the Ecological Life-Cycles of Newspapers and Magazines" , "Ecological Improvements in the Paper Chain" and "User-friendly Environmental Data for Paper Rolls".
Acceptance of return of used products EN15 Unsold newspapers and magazines are taken back by the wholesalers (distributors). Over 80 percent of the newspapers and magazines are recycled after use. Please click here to find further information (in German).
Fines and sanctions for non-compliance with applicable international declarations, conventions and treaties, as well as with national, regional and local regulations relating to environmental issues EN16 No such fines were imposed in the period under consideration. Axel Springer AG complies with all statutory regulations or even exceeds such regulations in some cases ( for example, remaining far below the threshold values where solvents are concerned).
