On site in FSC-certified eucalyptus plantations in the province of Rio Negro, Uruguay: AG, Machine operator Patricia Podchibiakin explains to Florian Nehm, the Axel Springer AG Corporate Sustainability Officer, the procedure for timber harvesting. Short fiber pulp is produced from this eucalyptus wood in Uruguay, which is used in German factories for example for the production of paper for printing magazine covers.
All other printing paper for newspapers and magazines is made from the fiber of spruces and pines. These conifers used for our publication paper grow in the green belt of the Northern hemisphere – nurtured by water, nutrients and solar energy. Printed products such as papers, magazines and catalogs are collected as waste paper after use and then used for example as raw material for new newsprint paper. In Germany, approximately 80 percent of graphic papers (these include newspapers and magazines) are re-used. Thus the bulk of the wood fiber is used several times.
In the right menu bar, the Axel Springer AG forestry standards, a number of cross-border co-operation projects for the promotion of environmental and social standards in the wood, pulp and paper chain, as well as the participation in the "Business & Biodiversity" initiative are explained.
