New printing paper is made from used paper or fresh wood chips in a paper machine. The paper roll is then cut into the formats required by the customers. For newspapers and magazines in Germany and for its international subsidiaries, Axel Springer AG procured roughly 420,000 tons of printing paper in 2009 from around 50 paper mills in about 15 countries. Since 1993 the company has published the names and contacts of its paper suppliers. In addition to the commercial and technical quality contacts, there has, since 1993 in particular, been a continuous exchange of ideas with paper suppliers on issues of stakeholder management as well as specific issues relating to sustainability above all with regard to the procurement of wood raw materials. The Forestry Standards developed by the company have applied here since 1995.
In the right menu bar, details are given on the origin of printing paper, on the forestry standards and on the proportion of used paper in printing paper.
