“BILD zur Wahl”: 40 million copies to boost voter participation

Mass distribution to all households in Germany on the day before the federal parliamentary elections

On September 22, 2013, Germans will elect their new federal parliament and thus decide who will govern Germany for the next four years. In order to boost voter participation, which has been steadily declining for years, BILD will publish a special edition. “BILD zur Wahl” will have a circulation of more than 40 million copies and be published on the day before the elections, Saturday, September 21, 2013. In this edition, BILD will examine current political issues, scrutinize the parties’ election platforms, profile the candidates for the Federal Chancellor‘s office and analyze the most important polls.
 
“BILD is well known for trenchant political commentary. But the only purpose of this special edition is to motivate citizens to vote, to make politics fun and interesting and seize this crucial moment in a parliamentary democracy,” said Alfred Draxler, Deputy Editor to the BILD Editor-in-Chief.
 
“BILD zur Wahl” will appear alongside the regular BILD edition on Saturday before the elections and be distributed to all households in Germany free of charge. In order to remain impartial, BILD has decided not to print any political ads in the special edition.
 
Voter participation rates have been declining in Germany for years. The voter participation rate for the federal parliamentary elections in 1998 was 82.2 percent whereas in 2009 it went down to only 70.8 percent (source: bundeswahlleiter.de). The 18th German federal parliamentary elections will be held on September 22, 2013.
