“We shall never forget”: Young journalists to attend a Media seminar at Yad Vashem The World Holocaust Remembrance Center

To press release overview

A joint initative of: Berliner Morgenpost, DPA, Handelsblatt, Huffington Post, JDB Media, Kölner Stadt Anzeiger, Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, Rheinische Post, Rhein-Zeitung, Sächsische Zeitung, stern.de, Südwest-Presse, Tagesspiegel, BILD, BILD am SONNTAG and Yad Vashem

For the first time ever, editors-in-chief from major German media outlets will be sending young German journalists to attend a media seminar at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Israel. The idea “We shall never forget" is an initiative developed during a media seminar BILD Publishing Director Kai Diekmann attended with other editors-in-chiefs this past May at Yad Vashem .

For this unique and joint cooperation each of the editors-in-chief that visited Israel this past May have dedicated to nominate a member of their editorial staff (up to 30 years old) to attend this special media seminar to take place in April 2017. The Handelsblatt has agreed to sponsor an additional smaller media outlet that do not have the necessary funds to attend the seminar.

The young journalists attending the week-long seminar will hear from leading experts in Holocaust education, commemoration and documentation, meet with Holocaust survivors and hear their personal stories, explore the Museum Complex, and take special behind-the-scenes tours of Yad Vashem's collections and laboratories.  Participants will also attend the official memorial ceremonies marking the commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day, in the presence of Israel's Prime Minister and President, public officials and international dignitaries.  While in Israel, the participants will spend one day traveling to Tel Aviv for meetings with leading start-up companies.

"Our major challenge today is ensuring that future generations connect with the memory of the Holocaust," Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev commented. "Seminars and educational activities are vital so that the meanings of the Holocaust remain relevant, and the Shoah is not relegated to another chapter in the history of humanity. This is why this initiative is so important and why we welcome the opportunity to host these young journalists."

The organizers of the 2017 seminar are Stephan-Andreas Casdorff, Editor-in-Chief of Tagesspiegel and BILD Publishing Director, Kai Diekmann.

BILD Publishing Director, Kai Diekmann: “When you attend the official ceremonies on the Mount of Remembrance in Jerusalem, see the six flames of remembrance burning for six million Jews murdered and listen to the survivors and their children and grandchildren singing the Hatikvah – Israel’s national anthem – it is something you will never forget, not for the rest of your life. This is why I am deeply grateful to Yad Vashem and its chairman, Avner Shalev, for making this moment possible for our young colleagues.”

Tagesspiegel editor-in-chief Stephan-Andreas Casdorff: „Responsibility for the past, openness for the future - this is what sustains our relationship with Israel. However, actions count more than words. This is why we are undertaking this initiative. A shining torch of recognition is passed down from one generation of journalists to the next. What happened must never be erased from history and memory.“
