"Journalists are heroes": Axel Springer Academy launches new recruitment campaign

To press release overview

The Axel Springer Academy is starting a new advertising campaign with the slogan "Journalists are heroes". The first advertising motifs can now be seen in German print and online media. Applications to start training in 2012 can be submitted by 16 June 2011 at www.axel-springer-akademie.de.

"We want use this campaign to draw attention to what is one of the most exciting professions there is", says Academy Director Marc Thomas Spahl. "If journalists have really mastered their craft, if they pursue their profession with passion and perseverance, they can achieve a great deal and sometimes make the world a little better, on a large and a small scale. We want the ads to convey this enthusiasm."

In each of the new ads, three journalists are introduced. One example is the South African Donald Woods, whose courageous reports in the 1970s marked milestones in the struggle against apartheid. Or the German Souad Mekhennet, who was arrested a few months ago in the turmoil of the Egyptian revolution, and who after her release – still on site – continued to write about the conditions and the torture in prison. The campaign also recalls journalists such as Kurt Tucholsky and Egon Erwin Kisch.

The Axel Springer Academy, which developed this campaign itself, will again be offering editorial training in the coming year for up to 40 young journalists. During the two-year training program, the junior reporters learn their craft from scratch; the focus is on cross-media work and imparting research skills. The training offers the highest possible standard of practical experience, the trainee journalists can extensively train what they have learned in the editorial offices of the publishing house. The vocational training is concluded with a one-week master course in "Investigative Journalism" at the Columbia School of Journalism in New York, with which the Axel Springer Academy has an exclusive exchange program.

There are no entry requirements for an application, with the exception of talent and passion. Upon completion of the training, the prospects of being taken on are above average. More information is available at www.axel-springer-akademie.de.
